Who Are The Walkers in Your Neighborhood?

September 25 2008 | Posted by admin | One Comment | Email This Post

shoes.jpgIt's amazing what we can see when we get out of the car and take a stroll down the street. Whether the pace is leisurely or brisk, the landscape changes when viewed at street level. Walking Clubs are furthering this trend. They're a fun way to get moving, meet people and explore different neighborhoods. And, there are two new Walking Clubs in Long Beach right now.

The Bixby Knolls Strollers meet every Saturday at 7:30am at Starbucks (4406 Atlantic Avenue at San Antonio Drive in Long Beach). The walk lasts about an hour with a different route each week that shows off a section of the neighborhood -- past walks have included explorations of the housing develpoment off La Linda Drive and introductions to local businesses.

This group has only been meeting for a month, and I'm already hearing great things everywhere I go. From press in the local papers to a mention at my local Weight Watchers meeting, people are talking about strollin' in the Knolls and enjoying every minute of it!

For more information about the Strollers contact blair@bixbyknollsinfo.com. Or, to stay "in the Knowls" sign up for the Business Improvement Association's email newsletter at www.bixbyknollsinfo.com.

If you tend to hang out closer to the beach or mornings aren't really your thing, then you might want to meet up with Justin Rudd and the 2nd Street Walkers. This six-week program meets each Monday at 6:30pm in front of Washington Mutual on 2nd Street through March 31.

The weekly route will be announced at the start of the walk. Each loop is one mile. There will be several pace groups. While some walkers may be able to complete four laps or more during the hour, others may be able to complete fewer or partial laps. Walkers can do the route alone, or in groups of their choice.

There is no cost to participate, but those that choose to make a $5 donation will be entered into a drawing to split the Jackpot of that night's donations with C.A.T.(Justin's nonprofit Community Action Team).

The 2nd Street Walkers had their first meeting last week, but it's not too late to join the fun. Visit www.justinrudd.com/walkers.html for more information.

Spring is just starting to peak out through the winter gloom, so get out there and enjoy some fresh air. If you can't meet up with these local clubs, maybe you can start your own. Grab some friends and hit the street!
